Education system in USA: Important Facts

Primary and Secondary School

American students attend primary and secondary school for 12 years before getting their high school diploma. Children in US begin their elementary school by the age of 6. After elementary, they move to middle school or junior high school and then procees with highschool. Upon graduation of high school 12th grade, students are awarded a diploma or certificate and will be eligible to go to college or university for higher education.

Qualification Duration Description
Associate degree 2 years Job oriented programs offered by community colleges helps graduate to start a career, it is also considered as equivalent to first two years of a 4-year bachelor's degree
Bachelor's degree 3 - 4 years Commonly known as Undergraduate degree that includes core courses, major, minor and elective. These 4 years are known as Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior. For Example: Bachelor of Arts (B. A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Master's degree (Professional)

1 to 3 years Leads students from first degree to particular profession; duration depends on field of study.  
Master's degree (Academic) 2 years Generally awarded in traditional disciplines of humanities, arts, and science; for example Master of Arts, Master in Science. 
Doctorate or PhD 3 to 5 years Doctoral degrees are awarded on completion of dissertation and successful defence before a panel of faculty members. 

 

Intakes

Most universities and colleges in USA begin their classes in Fall intake usually, which is August/September. Some Universities offer January/February intake, called as the Spring intake. In fact, a few Universities offer Summer intake for limited programs, between the months of May and August.

Tuition Fee and Cost Of Living

Average tuition fee for a year will be between $15,000 and $25000.
Though cost of living varies by many factors such as location and life style, in most cases their living expense will be in a range of $700 - $1,000 per month.

Admission Requirements

For Undergraduate degrees, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is required for admission along with 12th grade.
For graduate studies, academic requirement is 4 year degree after their 12th grade (10+2+4), though some universities accept 3 year degree(10+2+3). Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score is also required along with the academic pre-requisite studies such as bachelor/master degree.
For MBA admission, Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required.
If the student is not from English speaking country, TOEFL / IELTS scores can be provided as proof of language proficiency.

Scholarships and Financial Aids

In USA, there are 2 type starships are available, Merit based and Need based. Merit based scholarships are awarded based on some one’s academic, athletic or artistic merit. Need based scholarships are based on financial need for completion of the study program, usually offered for domestic students only. Many American universities offer merit based scholarships for international students. Many scholarships and bursaries are offered by American government and different private and public establishments.

Work Authorization

Students are authorized to work up to 20 hours a week on campus during the academic session and full time during vacation. Research Assistantship/Teaching Assistantship positions as available on campus for Graduate students who are undergoing MS and PhD. Usually these positions are offered in their primary field of studies. Off-campus part-time employment during studies are not permitted normally; however are permitted by the Designated School Official rarely under certain conditions

Stay Back

International students get one year of OPT (optional practical training) after their graduation to work in the U.S.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F1 visa holders to work full time in their field of study for 12 months after their graduation. This would help students to gain practical experience and training to complement their education.
Students graduating with a STEM degree, which is science, technology, engineering and mathematics, can apply for an extension of 24 months, making it a total of 36 months stay back after graduation.
